Delicious afternoon teas served in comfortable lounges beside real log fires
The great British Afternoon Tea was first introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840.
The Duchess complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon and would regularly ask for a tray of tea, bread & butter and cake to be brought to her room to stem the hunger and anticipation of the evening meal which was usually served fashionably late at around 8pm.
It wasn’t long before invites were sent to her friends asking them to join her in her room at Woburn Abbey to enjoy tea and cake as a more social occasion.
Soon enough, Afternoon Tea developed as a private social event for Ladies who climbed the ranks of society. It was only when Queen Victoria engaged in the Afternoon Tea ritual that it became a formal occasion on a larger scale known as ‘Tea Receptions’.
So why not enjoy a traditional British treat in the historic Angel & Royal and indulge in a mouth-watering selection of dainty finger sandwiches, cake and homemade scones whilst relaxing in our lounge. It really is the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends or spoil your loved ones!
